How to become a police officer in Rhode Island

Minimum standards
Certification
RI POST police officer certification (graduation from the RIMPTA Basic Recruit Training course)
Minimum age
R.I.G.L. ch. 42-28.2 and 270-RICR-30-00-2 set no minimum age; hiring departments set age limits. RIMPTA's entry fitness table includes an 'Age <20' column.
Education
High school diploma, GED, or college diploma/transcript, submitted in the RIMPTA enrollment package (Recruit Checklist item VII).
Citizenship
State law and the academy rules set no citizenship rule; the RIMPTA enrollment application asks whether the applicant is a U.S. citizen and, if naturalized, when.
Driver's license
Copy of driver's license required in the RIMPTA recruit and lateral application packages (issuing state not specified).
Disqualifiers
The statute and academy rules list no disqualifying offenses. Enrollment requires a department background investigation including a National Decertification Index check, an FBI fingerprint/background check, mental-health records releases, a psychological exam and a medical exam.
Basic academy
RIMPTA Basic Recruit Training: the sample course outline totals 979 hours over a 22-week recruit class at the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln (the 2026-II class runs Aug. 3 - Dec. 18, 2026). Recruits must be hired as probationary officers and sponsored by a department; individuals cannot apply directly. Graduation requires at least a 70% grade average and passing (70%) certification exams and practical skills assessments, with one retake allowed (270-RICR-30-00-2.3(D)).
State exam
None required
Fitness standard
Entry: mandatory Physical Fitness Assessment before the class starts, at RIMPTA's 40th-percentile standards by age and sex (1-minute push-ups, 1-minute sit-ups, 1.5-mile run, 300-meter run; PT Assessment Score Sheet revised and effective April 2026). Exit: 300 m and 1.5-mile runs at the 50th percentile of Cooper norms, Alpha course in 3:02 or less, and Bravo course in 1:19 or less (270-RICR-30-00-2.3(E)(4)).
Officers from other states
In-state lateral transfers need POST lateral certification: a letter of good standing or employment verification from the prior agency, plus psychological, medical/drug and background checks (including the National Decertification Index). Out-of-state officers apply through the hiring department as 'waiver candidates' and submit their original academy curriculum with the standard background, medical and psychological documents. Any RIMPTA training still required is not published.

R.I.G.L. ch. 42-28.2 has POST set physical, educational, mental and moral standards, but the published rule (270-RICR-30-00-2, effective 2013) covers academy operations, academics (70% grade average; 70% pass/fail certification exams) and fitness, not entry age or citizenship. The academy serves municipal departments except Providence (which runs its own academy), college/university police, DEM enforcement, and other POST-approved agencies (§ 42-28.2-2). RI State Police troopers and DPS Division of Sheriffs deputies are outside the RIMPTA municipal standards. RIMPTA's About page has described the academy as about 850 hours over 20 weeks; the current figures are 979 hours over 22 weeks. The rule's appendix lists an older five-test entry battery (300 m run, sit-and-reach, sit-ups, bench press, 1.5-mile run); RIMPTA's 2018 and April 2026 score sheets use push-ups, sit-ups, 1.5-mile and 300 m. Chapter 42-28.2 has no officer certification/decertification statute, no annual in-service hour minimum and no statutory deadline to finish basic training; § 42-28.2-8(a)(5) leaves the deadline to POST.
