How to become a police officer in Maine
- Certifying body
- Maine Criminal Justice Academy Board of Trustees (MCJA)
- Certification
- Certificate of Eligibility (full-time law enforcement officer); part-time officers hold Law Enforcement Pre-Service certification
- Minimum age
- 21; 20 with an associate's degree or 60 credit hours of postsecondary education (25 M.R.S. §2804-G).
- Education
- High school diploma, or GED with no part below 35 and an average of at least 45 (MCJA BLETP entrance standards).
- Citizenship
- No U.S. citizenship requirement in 25 M.R.S. ch. 341 or the MCJA BLETP entrance standards; hiring agencies may set one.
- Driver's license
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license (BLETP entrance standards).
- Disqualifiers
- Convictions for, or conduct penalized as, murder or any Class A-D crime, or violations of Maine Criminal Code chs. 15, 19, 25 or 45 (Board waivers possible). Polygraph, psychological exam and physician's medical certificate also required. Certificates can be revoked under 25 M.R.S. §2806-A.
- Basic academy
- Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (BLETP): 720 hours over 18-20 weeks at MCJA, Vassalboro (16-227 CMR ch. 5 §2.A). Students also need the Law Enforcement Pre-Service certificate (25 M.R.S. §2804-B) before exercising powers.
- State exam
- Full-time law enforcement certification exam, given at the end of BLETP; 75% to pass (16-227 CMR ch. 5 §2.E.10). Also used for recertification and waivers.
- Fitness standard
- Board entrance physical fitness standard (the Board does not publish the events with its entrance standards). BLETP exit standard: 50th percentile on age- and gender-normed test (ch. 5 §2.E.9).
- Time to certify
- Complete BLETP within 12 months of initial full-time employment. The Board may extend up to 180 days (25 M.R.S. §2804-C(1)).
- Officers from other states
- The Board may waive BLETP when an equivalent course was completed (25 M.R.S. §2804-C(1)). Recent waivers required EVOC, Maine Crash Reporting & Investigation, and passing the Maine full-time certification exam (BOT minutes, May 9, 2025).
- Continuing training
- Annual in-service on Board-mandated topics (14 hours listed for 2026) plus 20 elective hours per two-calendar-year cycle (25 M.R.S. §2804-E; MCJA mandatory-training page). Missing them forces revocation.
Neither the statute nor the entrance standards set a citizenship requirement. The MCJA in-service page (2024 cycle text) says 20 mandated hours per year, but the 2026 topic list in the BOT minutes totals 14 hours. Corrections officers follow a separate Basic Corrections Training Program. Harbor masters and shellfish wardens need only pre-service plus in-service (§2804-I).
