How to become a police officer in Nebraska

Minimum standards
Certification
Nebraska Law Enforcement Officer Certificate/Diploma (basic law enforcement certification issued through NLETC)
Minimum age
The applicant must reach age 21 before completing certification training (Neb. Rev. Stat. 81-1410(2)(b); 79 NAC 8-005.01B).
Education
High school graduate (including home-school graduate) or GED, and able to read, write, and understand English at the 11th-grade level, shown on the TABE test (81-1410(2)(h); 79 NAC 8-005.01H, 8-006).
Citizenship
U.S. citizen (79 NAC 8-005.01A). The statute allows admission if the applicant becomes a citizen before certification is completed (81-1410(2)(a)).
Driver's license
Valid motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license (81-1410(2)(d); 79 NAC 8-005.01D).
Disqualifiers
Conviction of a crime punishable by 1+ year imprisonment unless pardoned or overturned; DWI within the prior 2 years; dishonorable or bad-conduct discharge; prior denial, revocation, or suspension of law enforcement certification; violent Class I misdemeanor-level offenses, sexual assault/abuse, violence against children, or misdemeanor domestic violence (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9)). Good-character rules also bar marijuana use in the last 2 years and other illegal drug use in the last 5 years (79 NAC 8-005.01, 8-005.02).
Basic academy
Basic certification course at NLETC in Grand Island: 15 weeks, three times a year, capped at 50 students. Other council-certified academies are run by the Nebraska State Patrol, Lincoln, Omaha, and Sarpy-Douglas. NLETC publishes the course length in weeks, not hours.
State exam
None required
Fitness standard
JTA (Job Task Analysis) Physical Task Testing, given during week 1 of the NLETC academy with a retest in week 4. Failing it means separation from training. PSAC approved it on Nov. 19, 2025 to replace the PRET entrance test, and it applies only to NLETC; the other academies keep their own entrance tests. Students must also complete the essential physical job tasks to certify (79 NAC 8-005.01S).
Time to certify
A noncertified conditional officer must apply right away, enroll in the next available basic class, and can serve no more than 16 consecutive weeks. Extensions are 2 weeks for good cause, or up to 16 more weeks if the officer was turned away for class-size reasons (81-1414(6)). The application packet is due within 21 days of hire.
Officers from other states
Reciprocity program (81-1414(2)(c); 79 NAC 3-004): needs an out-of-state academy certificate plus at least 2 consecutive years of full-time certified service with arrest powers, no more than 4 years inactive, and a certificate not revoked, suspended, or under investigation. The applicant must meet all Chapter 8 admission standards and pass a Council-approved written exam (70% minimum, 2 attempts) and the physical job-tasks test. Paperwork is due within 21 days of appointment.
Continuing training
32 hours of continuing education per calendar year through 2026: de-escalation/mental health/substance abuse refreshers, at least 2 hours of anti-bias training, firearms, officer wellness, and legal updates (81-1414.07 as amended by LB1241). From Jan. 1, 2027 (LB784), it's 24 hours for agencies with fewer than 25 full-time officers and 32 for larger ones. An annual handgun qualification is also required (81-1412).

81-1401(8) covers State Patrol members, sheriffs and deputies, municipal police, Game and Parks conservation officers, and others. The Nebraska State Patrol trains troopers at its own Training Academy, and agency academies may set higher entrance standards (79 NAC 8-004). There's no separate state licensing exam: academy unit and comprehensive tests need 70% (79 NAC 5). Only reciprocity candidates take a Council written exam.
