A misdemeanor of deceit or sex offense within 5 years, or a drug misdemeanor within 1 year. Marijuana use within 1 year or while in law enforcement/public safety. A felony-level drug violation within 3 years (or while in LE). Misuse of prescription drugs within 3 years. Dismissal, BCD, DD or OTH military discharge. Certification denied or revoked elsewhere. (IDAPA 11.11.01.055)
Basic academy
POST Patrol Academy: 565 total hours, about 14.5 weeks, curriculum effective January 1, 2026; it includes some pre-academy online modules. Held at the Meridian campus or at POST-approved college or agency academies.
State exam
No separate state licensing exam for academy graduates (they take academy exams). Lateral and out-of-state applicants must pass the POST Challenge Exam (IDAPA 11.11.01.059).
Fitness standard
POST Patrol/Detention Physical Readiness Test (PRT), required to enter and to graduate from the patrol academy and for challenge certification. Minimums: vertical jump 14.0 in; 1-minute sit-ups 15; push-ups 21; 300 m in 77.0 s; 1.5 mi in 17:17. Employing agencies must also assess physical readiness (IDAPA 11.11.01.057.03).
Time to certify
Academy, at least 40 hours of field training, and 6 consecutive months of probation must be completed within 12 months of employment (IDAPA 11.11.01.057.08). Statute requires certification within 1 year of employment; the Council may extend for good cause (I.C. §19-5109).
Officers from other states
Academy challenge (IDAPA 11.11.01.059). Requires Idaho employment, employment or certification as an officer elsewhere (or with the federal government) within the last 5 years, a challenge packet with training records, and an academy curriculum equivalent to Idaho's. Then the applicant must pass the PRT and the POST Challenge Exam, do 40 or more hours of field training and 6 months of probation, and finish within 1 year of employment (057.08.d). If prior training is not equivalent, the applicant attends the academy.
Continuing training
40 hours every 2 calendar years. At least 24 must cover firearms (8 h plus an annual qualification), arrest techniques/defensive tactics (8), emergency vehicle operation (4) and legal updates (4) (IDAPA 11.11.01.131.01). Certification is suspended if this is not met.

A single POST system covers city police, county deputies and ISP troopers. Troopers attend the POST patrol academy plus ISP-specific training. Corrections, detention, juvenile, probation/parole and emergency-communications officers are separate POST disciplines with their own academies and some different ages. Elected officials (such as sheriffs), the ISP director, temporary commissions, and officers mainly doing parking or animal control are exempt from mandatory certification (I.C. §19-5109(2); IDAPA 11.11.01.051.04). Some IDAPA subsections carry temporary-rule dates of 7-1-26. Certification lapses after 3 years out of service; after 5 to 8 years the academy must be repeated (§100). No upper age limit in state rules.
